Frequently Asked Questions

 You do not need a referral to see a speech pathologist at Word Haven. Families are welcome to self-refer and book directly. A referral from your GP may be required if you plan to access Medicare rebates through a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP).

 Sessions can be provided at our Glen Waverley clinic, at school or within the community depending on availability and the needs of the child. School and mobile appointments are limited and may not be available in all areas. 

Yes, telehealth speech pathology sessions are available for families who prefer flexible appointments from home. 

Sessions are interactive, goal-focused and tailored to your child’s needs. Telehealth can be a great option for parent coaching, home practice and supporting communication in your child’s everyday environment.

 The initial consultation generally includes developmental screening, clinical observation and discussion about your child’s communication. If further assessment is recommended, we may suggest a standardised assessment, such as the CELF-5, to explore your child’s communication strengths and areas where they may benefit from support. 

Speech Therapy sessions are 45 minutes of direct time.  The remaining session time is used to complete clinical notes, prepare relevant home practice resources, and communicate with families or educators as needed. Session notes are provided to families and, with your consent, can also be shared with your child’s educators. 

We welcome clients who are self-managed or plan-managed under the NDIS.

Medicare

You may be eligible for a Medicare rebate through a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, previously known as a CDM or EPC plan. This may provide rebates for up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year.

Some children may also be eligible for Medicare rebates through the M10 Eligible Disability pathway, depending on their diagnosis and individual circumstances.

To check eligibility and referral requirements, please speak with your GP before booking.

Private Health Funds

Depending on your provider and level of cover, you may be able to claim a rebate through your private health insurance.

It is best to contact your health fund directly to confirm what speech pathology services are included and how much can be claimed.

Please note, you cannot claim a rebate from both Medicare and your private health fund for the same session.
